STOP. THINK. DIS-ARM. (STDA)

Partner with us as we prepare to launch STOP. THINK. DIS-ARM – A city-wide call-to-action prevention program focused on addressing the epidemic of crime and violence in our neighborhoods and communities. As a sensory influenced, non-traditional, innovative approach to bringing people back to their senses before they reach the point-of-no-return from aggressive behavior, or worse yet, taking the lives of others, STDA is designed to help people make informed decisions in the heat of the moment. Pandemic learning has been particularly difficult for low-income Detroit Public School students, many of whom were already struggling academically prior to the Coronavirus Pandemic.  According to Katharine Strunk, director of Michigan State University’s Education Policy Innovation Collaboration, “the learning gaps got bigger, and this is a major equity problem.”  The report also found that Black, Latino, and economically disadvantaged students began last school year behind their peers academically and ended it even further behind, according to the report. “This data makes clear what we feared: The children whose learning was most impacted by the pandemic are the students who are often the most underserved, including Black and economically disadvantaged students,” said Jennifer Mrozowski, director of communications for the Education Trust-Midwest, a Royal Oak-based nonprofit education advocacy group.

Your Gift will go a long way in helping W.C.F.U. provide a safe space for students to learn, grow and flourish.  Students will engage in activities including but not limited to “Reading for Success”; “Math Matters”; practicing Mindfulness; anti-bullying strategies; field trips; and much more!  Lunches and snacks will also be provided!

This program is critically necessary for several reasons.  Not only will it help to lessen the learning gaps brought on by COVID-19, but just as importantly, it will keep our youth safe by helping them avoid the pitfalls of idleness that usually occurs during the hot summer months.  The future of every child/youth is dependent upon equitable access to a good education.  At Women, Children & Families United our programs are focused on empowering people to make sustainable change for successful outcomes.  I hope that we can count on you to help us provide 15 – 20 K – 8th grade students with the support and resources they need to get back on track, recover some of the lags they’ve suffered, and bolster their education.

Please send your tax deductible (37-1863023) donation payable to:                                                                                                                                                                         W.C.F.U., 8000 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI  48202 or W.C.F.U., P.O.
